Lesson 2 -  Learning Prepositional Rules
Read and memorize the following rules.
 1.  A noun or pronoun follow a preposition.

Noun - is a person, place or thing.
Pronoun - takes the place of a noun.

2.  A preposition links a noun or a pronoun with some other word in the sentence.

3.  The noun or pronoun that the preposition link to some other work in the sentence is called the preposition's "object" (or the object of the preposition).

4.  The preposition shows the relationship between the object (noun or pronoun) and the other word.  Look at the following sentence:

The kitten (in the tree) scratched a flea.
                                         |
                                |         Object of the preposition
                            Preposition

a.  (in the tree) is a prepositional phrase.
                 b.  "in" (the preposition tells you WHERE the kitten is in relation to the object "tree".
** You can change the relationship between the word "kitten" (the subject) and the word
"tree" (the object of the preposition) by simply changing the preposition.  Look at the
                        following sentence:

The kitten (under the tree) scratched a flea.

The kitten (behind the tree) scratched a flea.

The kitten (above the tree) scratched a flea.

                   c.  When you are analyzing a sentence ALWAYS find the prepositional phrase FIRST
and surround it with parentheses as I've done in the sentences above.
                    d.  A preposition usually comes first, then the object.
                    e.  IF A PREPOSITION IS NOT IN A PREPOSITIONAL PHRASE ---- THEN IT IS NOT
                         A PREPOSITION!
                    f.  Prepositions answer WHERE.

                    g.  THE FOLLOWING INFO IS JUST FOR YOUR INFORMATION.  Don't worry about
trying to understand what it means yet.  Simply read the definitions and move on to
doing the worksheets.  There will be a complete less on this last part later in the
                        tutorial.

                        Modified - means "change"

Adjective - modifies (changes) a noun or pronoun.

Adverb - modifies (changes) a verb, an adjective or an adverb.

END OF TUTORIAL - MOVE ON TO DOING THE WORKSHEET
