The Myth of Genius - In 1926, psychologist Dr. Catherine Morris Cox and a group of Stanford psychologists including the founder of the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale Dr. Lewis Terman, published a study of the "most eminent men and women to live between 1450-1850." The study estimated IQs based mainly on the degree of intelligence exemplified before the age of 17. It is one of the most referenced studies when discussing possible IQ's of past geniuses. Here are some more of her findings.  http://iml.jou.ufl.edu/projects/Spring04/Artigas/facts.htm

A follow-up of subjects scoring above 180 IQ in Terman's genetic studies of genius - Abstract
Although there are numerous studies of gifted students, there have been no studies following up the very high IQ students into adulthood. Using the Terman files, 26 subjects with scores above 180 IQ were compared with 26 randomly selected subjects from Terman's sample. Findings were generally that the extra IQ points made little difference and that extremely high IQ does not seem to indicate "genius" in the commonly understood sense of the word. http://www.geniusdenied.com/articles/Record.aspx?NavID=13_0&rid=11445
