Tips for Getting Good Grades in College
1. Always sit in the
front two rows of the class - This will help you keep focused, will
eliminate issues you may have hearing or seeing your professor, and will
show your commitment to your education. .
2. NEVER wear pajamas
to class. Image is important.
3. Mark all exam
dates and homework due dates on your calendar, so you don’t forget (and start studying at least
a few days in advance!) 4. Always arrive to
class on time, if not early. You
don't want to miss any information that you may be tested on, and some
professors lock the door after their class "officially
begins."
If you have to be late, find out if there is another section of your class
that you could sit in on.
5. Take advantage of
your professor’s office hours.
6. Try to ask your
professor well-thought out questions both in and out of class.
7. Always type ALL
assignments and papers.
8. Take good notes.
If you haven’t learned to pick out the key points in a lecture,
it may be easier to learn to write very quickly and write everything down.
9. Look over your
notes for fifteen minutes every day so you don’t have to ‘cram’ as
much when an exam is coming.
10.
Figure out how you learn and cater your studying habits to your learning
type. For example, if you
learn by reading it may help to type out a question and answer sheet from
your notes in “quiz” manner.
11. Be organized. Purchase 1" binders for each
subject. Keep hole-punched, lined paper or a lined paper notebook in
each binder, along with a spare pencil. All notes should be secured
in order in the binder as they are taken, so you will not misplace
them. Keep a copy of the class syllabus at the very front of
your binder.
12.
Be prepared going into each semester. Attempt to read the first few
chapters of the textbook for each class before the semester begins.
Continue to read a chapter a week as the semester passes. Attempt to
complete assignments in this manner as well when you receive your
syllabus. Once mid-terms and finals arrive, this will help to lessen
your workload.
13.
Familiarize yourself with textbook glossary terms before the semester
begins.
14.
Take advantage of any free Academic Development or Tutoring Services on
campus.
