Interesting Facts About George Washington:
  • Lieutenant Colonel in the Colonial military (Commissioned 1754, at the age of 22).  Served in the French and Indian War (lasted 1754-1763), a war which was started over disputes over British and French control of the Ohio Valley. 
  • Promoted to Colonel (1755).
  • Became commander in chief of the Virginia Militia (1755).  
  • Left the Army (1758). 
  • Member of the Virginia House of Burgesses (1759-1774)
  • Elected Commander in Chief of the Continental Army, the military force created by the Continental Congress to fight against Britain in the war for Independence (May, 1775 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania). 
  • Began his command of the Continental Army (July 3, 1775, in Cambridge, Massachusetts.)  He led them through the American Revolution, the war that allowed America to gain independence from Britain.   
  • Delegate to the First and Second Continental Congresses (1774-1775). 
  • Elected as the First President of the United States (Took Office on April 30, 1789). 
  • Reelected president (1792). 
  • Left office (1797).
