   Acceleration:
A collection of books that specifically focus on acceleration, grade skipping, and early college.

A guide for gifted kids who want to accelerate, home school or enter college early. Author, Lauren Betancourt skipped high school and entered college at age 13, graduating at age 16. This book details the process she took, the social questions and answers on entering college early, pros and cons, how to research laws and generally how to prepare to accelerate or skip grades. SAT, CLEP and FAFSA information is included to help students learn how to get financial aid without a high school diploma. The book will appeal to k-12 parents and teachers. It also addresses one of the most difficult education questions: how to help gifted kids determine if acceleration is the right decision for them. A list of college programs that accept students to full-time college between the ages of 10 and 16+ is also included in an appendix along with a list of organizations that perform various services for the hundreds of kids that have entered college under the age of 16. Appendix and index

Accidental Genius
by Kevin James Kearny, Kevin James Kearney, Cassidy Yumiko Kearney, Kearney Kevin, Kearney Cassidy  ISBN: 0962874612
This is the story of Michael Kearny who graduated from college at age 10 with a 3.6 GPA in Anthropology.  He continued on to do graduate work, earning a Master of Science degree in Chemistry at age 14.  It also includes the story of Megan Kearney who was equally as gifted, but had a different educational experience.  This is biographical story and doesn't have much in the way of tips or suggestions. Lauren and I really liked this book and thought the story was very representative of what the acceleration process is really like.   We both recommend it.

Genius in Residence
by Audrey Grost  ISBN: 0133512053
Genius in Residence is by the mother of, Michael Grost, who attended both college and the fifth grade simultaneously, at age nine. He graduated from college at the age of 15. has an IQ of about 200.  He has received numerous honors. He and his parents also received the extreme, undisguised hostility of some other parents.

A Case of Brilliance
by Rebecca Lange Hein  ISBN: 1401044727

Read this book and meet Rebecca, Ellis, Annette, and Lewis Hein, a home schooling family whose story offers compelling evidence that gifted people have unusual educational and emotional needs that must be served. This is a book of optimism, but also a commentary on the harm caused to gifted children who never learn the truth about their abilities. Read it and travel into the mind and heart of a profoundly gifted adult and her highly unusual husband and children.

Exceptionally Gifted Children
by Miraca U.M. Gross  ISBN: 0415314917
The first edition of this book, published in 1993, introduced 15 remarkable children, some of the most gifted young people ever studied, and traced their path through school, exploring their academic achievements (and in some cases enforced underachievement), their emotional development, their social relationships and their family relationships and upbringing. This new edition reviews these early years but also follows the young people over the subsequent ten years into adulthood. The study reveals the ongoing negative academic and social effects of prolonged underachievement and social isolation imposed on gifted children by inappropriate curriculum and class placement and shows clearly the long lasting benefits of thoughtfully planned individual educational programs. The young adults of this study speak out and show how what happened in school has influenced and still influences many aspects of their lives. Miraca Gross provides a clear, practical blueprint for teachers and parents who recognize the special learning needs of gifted children and seek to respond effectively.

Nature's Gambit: Child Prodigies and the Development of Human Potential (Education and Psychology of the Gifted, No 9)
by David Henry Feldman, Lynn T. Goldsmith ISBN: 0807731439
From the Amazon Review: Anyone who has any interest in the phenomenon of child prodigies will find this book a fascinating read. It traces the early development of 6 children who are prodigies (able to work competitively at the adult level) in some field. Of the 6, the fields the children excel in are as follows: 2 are in chess, 1 is a writer, 1 a musician, 1 in mathematics, 1 is extremely gifted overall (one of the highest IQs recorded). The author explains why prodigies are more often found in some fields, such as music or chess, than others (such as writing- the writing prodigy was the only 1 of the 6 children studied who was not working at an adult professional level). The author delves into the "coincidences" of time, place, technology and parenting that allow these prodigies to develop. He draws on other examples of prodigies outside of his own 6 subjects.
