ALL ABOUT CLEP EXAMS

CLEP Exams are scheduled by the College Board that administers the SAT.  For more information on where to take the CLEP Exams and the CLEP Test Schedule, go to http://www.collegeboard.com.

CLEP Exams are similar to AP Exams.  AP Exams can earn high school students college credits while they are still in high school.  CLEP Exams are very similar exams, but they are available to EVERYONE!  You do not have to be in high school in order to take CLEP Exams.  The advantage of CLEPs is that any age can take them.

How Students Can Earn College Credits by Taking CLEPS
Many colleges and universities across the United States accept scores from CLEP Exams and they offer anywhere from 3 to 12 college credits per exam, depending on the exam taken.

It is best to take the CLEP exams either before you enter college or during your Freshman year in college.  Why?  Most of the CLEP exams cover lower level subjects such as Algebra, English and History.  These are subjects that often required during the Freshman/Sophomore years of college.  If a student waits to consider taking CLEP tests, they will probably be scheduled to take the actual 16 week courses by their college advisors.  If a college or university accepts the credits from CLEP tests, then it is possible for a student to skip his or her Freshman year credits which will be earned by passing the CLEPs.

Some Problems You Could Run Into With CLEPS
Colleges are NOT REQUIRED to accept credits from CLEPS.  Some college and universities DO NOT accept CLEP credits at all.  The good news is that a lot do, especially in community colleges.  However, many universities do accept CLEP Scores too.

You do not have to get permission to take CLEP exams.  However, if you are already in college, you may have to get permission to take the exams before they will be accepted the "that" college system.  If you are in high school, simply have the scores sent to your home address and do not put a school address down on the CLEP Score Sheet.  You will have to submit the scores (by writing the college board and asking them to send a transcript of your CLEP Scores), to whatever college you are entering.

The next problem with CLEP Exams is that some colleges will disqualify a student for FRESHMAN SCHOLARSHIPS if they enter the college or university with too many "transfer" credits.  So, students may have to choose whether they want to skip the Freshman Year credits and not receive the Freshman Scholarship or take the Freshman Courses in order to receive whatever Freshman Scholarship is available.  In any case, there is often a minimum number of credits that CAN transfer in while still allowing the student the opportunity to take advantage of the Freshman Scholarship.  You will have to investigate each school you are entering to find out what scholarships are available, if you would be eligible and whether or not the school accepts CLEP exams for credit.

HERE IS A LIST OF CLEP EXAMS GIVEN BY THE COLLEGE BOARD**

** Check with the College Board to be sure that the exam you want is available.  Some exams may not be given any longer.
