Gifted Children

ExtremeIntellect Articles and Gifted Resources:

Definition of Gifted:  Endowed with great natural ability, intelligence, or talent.  Traditionally, one is said to be intellectually gifted when his or her IQ (Intelligence Quotient) falls above 130.  Giftedness is said to be an indication of a child's potential for high achievement in the future, both as a child and as an adult.

The government defines Gifted and Talented in the following manner:
"Gifted and talented children are those who by virtue of their outstanding abilities are capable of high performance.  These are children whose potentialities require differentiated education programs and/or services beyond those normally performance include those with demonstrated achievement or potential ability in any of the following areas, individually or in combination: general intellectual ability, specific academic aptitude, creative or productive thinking, leadership ability, visual and performing arts"
(Title XIV, p. 388)

And, also

"[Those] who give evidence of high achievement capability in areas such as intellectual, creative, artistic, or leadership capacity, or in specific academic fields, and who need services or activities not ordinarily provided by the school in order to fully develop those capabilities."   No Child Left Behind Act, P.L. 107-110 (Title IX, Part A, Definitions (22) (2002); 20 U.S.C. Sec. 7802 (22) (2004))

Why is it important to identify a child's giftedness?
Gifted students, often times, require a different educational process than other students.  If a child is gifted, they may require schooling different than that offered within the normal educational system in order to reach their full potential.  While some schools offer gifted and talented programs for outstanding students many programs are still poorly funded and have failed to reach their maximum potency.

What is the difference between "gifted" and "talented"?
The term gifted refers to the innate exceptional ability of a person.
The term talented refers to the exceptional performance of a person.  In other words, it refers to the exhibition of a person's excellent ability.

Talent is often exhibited a result of a student's learning experiences and opportunities.
